Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide. With this sedation method, patients experience a sense of well-being and relaxation while still remaining completely aware of their surroundings. A fitted mask is placed over the nose as the patient breathes normally to inhale the nitrous oxide. Once treatment is complete, the nitrous oxide is eliminated after a short period of inhaling only oxygen. There are no lingering effects. Local anesthetic is still given to deaden the pain of the procedure.
What You Need to do Before Your Nitrous Oxide Appointment
You must have a light, high carbohydrate meal 4-6 hours prior to sedation.
